The World Health Organization (WHO) adopted a resolution recognizing chronic kidney disease (CKD) as a priority health problem worldwide. Nephrology has been included in global prevention programs – a historic change that requires member states to monitor the burden of CKD and develop nephrological care systems.

– WHO's recognition of chronic kidney disease as a priority health problem is an important and long-awaited decision. This means that Poland will also have to give this area appropriate priority – emphasizes Prof. Magdalena Krajewska, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Wrocław University of Science and Technology and national consultant in nephrology.

Chronic kidney disease affects over 4.7 million people in Poland and is the second most common chronic disease after hypertension. The main challenge remains late diagnosis of the disease and insufficient staffing, especially in the field of nephrology nursing.
